District 25 (Admiralty, Woodlands): Honouring war heroes
Apart from the Admiralty and Woodlands zones, District 25 also covers Kranji which marks the site of a significant battleground during World War II. The Kranji War Memorial commemorates the 40,000 brave soldiers from Australia, New Zealand and British Commonwealth that died protecting Singapore.
Kranji is named after a local tree, the Pokok Keranji. The area around Kranji Road was used mainly for the Singapore-Kranji railway from Tank Road to Kranji which was opened in 1903. Along with the completion of the causeway, the Johor State railway and Singapore-Kranji railway were joined to become the Federated Malay States Railway (FMSR) in 1923. There is also a war memorial in Kranji dedicated to the Allied troops who fought and lost their lives in World War II. Fierce fighting took place at Kranji to repel to the Japanese forces who were entering Singapore through Johor. The oldest and only existing horse racing club, Kranji Racecourse, is also located there at Singapore Turf Club. The Singapore Turf Club first opened in 1842 and was originally called the Singapore Sporting Club. It was moved to Bukit Timah in 1933 and back to Kranji in 2000 next to Kranji MRT station.
